Typewriters brought back to life.
Books worth finding twice.
A queer-owned repair shop and bookstore where old machines get a second act and secondhand & rare books find new readers.
A lit space for rad people.
About the Shop
Indy Type Shop is a small, queer-owned business in Indianapolis built around two things that don't go out of style: well-made machines and well-loved books. We repair and restore typewriters of every make and era, from family heirlooms to flea-market finds, and we keep the shelves stocked with used and rare books worth digging through in person.
Everyone is welcome here, whether you're bringing in a typewriter that hasn't worked in years, hunting for a specific out-of-print title, or just want to browse for a while.
The Kind of Machines We Work On
A couple of examples from what's come through the shop over time — think of these as a sample of the kind of machines we see, not a live inventory. Call or stop in to ask what's on hand right now.
What We Do
Typewriter Repair
Cleaning, restoration, and mechanical repair for manual and electric typewriters. Reservations recommended for drop-off so we can give your machine proper attention.
Used & Rare Books
A rotating stock of secondhand paperbacks alongside harder-to-find and rare editions. New arrivals are shelved as they come in, so it's worth stopping by often.
In-Person Classes
Small-group sessions on typewriter basics and care, held in-store. Great for beginners and for anyone who just inherited a machine they don't know what to do with.
